Not Sure What Your Child Needs?

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis Before Calling Us

Parents often know something feels difficult before they know exactly what to call it. Your child may benefit from an evaluation if you notice:

Difficulty being understood
Limited words or sentences
Frustration when communicating
Difficulty following directions
Difficulty answering questions
Difficulty interacting with peers
Loss of previously acquired communication skills
Difficulty communicating wants and needs
Speech that sounds significantly different from peers of the same age
Concerns raised by a teacher, pediatrician, daycare provider, or family member
Before Therapy Begins

Every Treatment Plan Starts With Understanding the Child

Before ongoing therapy services begin, an appropriate speech and language evaluation or screening must be completed.

  • Identify areas of strength and need
  • Determine whether treatment is clinically indicated
  • Establish meaningful goals
  • Recommend appropriate frequency and duration
  • Create an individualized treatment plan

If a child has a recent outside evaluation, families may submit it for review to determine whether additional assessment is necessary.

What Therapy Looks Like

Individualized Care Built Around Real Life

Play based intervention
Structured skill building
Naturalistic language intervention
Caregiver coaching
AAC implementation
Visual supports
Evidence based speech sound intervention
Functional communication activities
Home practice strategies
Collaboration with families and professionals

Our goal is not simply to practice skills during a therapy session. We want communication skills to carry into the child's real life.

Session Length and Frequency

Time Built Around Your Child

30

30 Minutes

Appropriate for some children who benefit from shorter, highly focused intervention.

45

45 Minutes

Provides additional time for direct intervention, practice, and caregiver education.

60

60 Minutes

May be recommended for children with more complex communication needs, several treatment areas, AAC needs, or substantial caregiver training.

Session length and frequency are determined by the child's individual needs, age, goals, attention, diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment plan. Longer sessions are not automatically better.

In Person Speech Therapy

Is Telehealth Right for My Child?

Telehealth can work especially well for:

  • Language therapy across age groups
  • Articulation and phonology
  • Social communication and pragmatics
  • Reading and literacy support
  • Parent training and coaching
  • School age children who can engage through a screen
  • Families managing long commutes or busy schedules

In person services may be more appropriate for:

  • Very young children who have difficulty engaging through a screen
  • Assessments requiring direct physical observation
  • Children who are highly distractible without in person structure
  • Some complex motor speech presentations
  • Situations where hands on clinical assessment is necessary

Not sure which option is appropriate? We will help determine the best format based on your child's needs.

Therapy Continues Beyond the Session

  • Home practice activities
  • Caregiver coaching
  • Communication recommendations

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance?
Hand in Hand Speech Therapy is currently a private pay, out of network practice. We do not bill insurance plans directly. Upon request, we can provide a superbill that families may submit independently for possible reimbursement.
Do you provide superbills?
Yes. Superbills may be provided upon request when appropriate clinical documentation is available. Reimbursement is determined by the family's insurance plan and is not guaranteed.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Yes. We accept HSA and FSA payment methods for eligible services. Families should confirm eligibility requirements with their plan administrator.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. Telehealth may be available when it is clinically appropriate. The clinician will help determine whether virtual or in person services are the better fit.
How long are speech therapy sessions?
Sessions may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Session duration is based on the child's needs, age, attention, goals, treatment areas, and clinical recommendations.
How often will my child need speech therapy?
Frequency is individualized. Recommendations are made after reviewing assessment results, treatment needs, goals, and the child's ability to benefit from intervention.
Does my child need an evaluation before starting therapy?
Yes. An appropriate evaluation or screening must be completed before ongoing treatment begins. If your child recently completed an outside evaluation, we may review it to determine whether it provides enough information to develop a treatment plan.
What if my child already has an evaluation?
Submit the evaluation during intake. We will review it and determine whether it is current and comprehensive enough to guide treatment or whether additional assessment is recommended.
Do you provide bilingual speech therapy?
Bilingual and culturally responsive services may be available based on the child's language profile and provider availability. Recommendations consider the child's full linguistic background instead of viewing communication through an English only lens.
Does speaking more than one language cause a speech delay?
No. Exposure to multiple languages does not cause a speech or language disorder. Multilingual children should be evaluated within the context of their complete linguistic experience.
Do you provide AAC therapy?
Yes. Services may include AAC evaluation, implementation, communication partner training, device support, vocabulary development, and functional communication intervention.
Will insurance reimburse me?
Possibly. Out of network benefits vary between plans. Families are responsible for confirming coverage, deductibles, reimbursement policies, and authorization requirements directly with their insurance company.
Do you travel to families?
Hand in Hand Speech Therapy provides mobile and community based services within eligible service areas throughout New York City and Long Island. Availability depends on location, clinician availability, scheduling, and the type of service requested.
What ages do you treat?
Please contact us so we can confirm whether your child's age, communication needs, location, and schedule are a fit for current service availability.
